The seventh of the Eight Cooperative Principles is “Concern for Community.” One of the ways we interpret that is to use sustainable measures wherever we can—composting food scraps, using solar power, offering electric vehicle charging stations at each store, and many others. Check our list of sustainability measures and metrics at willystreet.coop/sustainability. In case you missed it, you can also read about Willy West’s new solar panels in April’s newsletter or watch our short video from 2023 about a few of Willy East’s eco-friendly features.
We should also mention the Fresh Deals bulk sale we’ll be having April 21-27, 2025. That week, everyone can save 15% on over 500 bulk products (excluding bulk water and bulk coffee), including nuts, flours, rices, granolas, dried beans, and more. Shopping in bulk not only tends to be cheaper, it reduces waste because you buy as little or as much of a product as you want, and it reduces packaging—especially if you bring in your own sanitized containers!
Check out the Co-op Deals sales, and the eco-friendly Staff Picks for ideas about sustainable products.
Here are three relatively small but mighty things you can do to reduce/reuse/recycle:
- Subscribe to receive the Reader electronically if you like (or don’t mind) reading online; this will help to reduce our use of paper. You sign up at willystreet.coop/emails.
- For every reusable shopping bag you use at the register, we contribute 10¢ to the Double Dollars program.
- We are once again collecting paper grocery bags at the stores for use at our local food pantry partners.
