Mad Hippie Vitamin C Serum

Full disclosure: I love pretty much everything by Mad Hippie. That being said, I’m a huge fan of their Vitamin C Serum. I love it because it absorbs quickly into my skin without feeling filmy or sticky, and it’s helped brighten my skin while subtly lessening the effects of my irresponsible habit of forgetting to wear sunscreen on my face. Did I mention that this serum smells good too? It’s kind of pricey, but this Vitamin C serum definitely pays for itself in terms of all the benefits it has.

MyChelle Sun Shield Liquid Tint SPF 50

I absolutely love everything about this sunscreen. It’s mineral-based, but disappears completely into the skin to where it feels and looks like you don’t have anything on. The tint is very sheer and leaves a natural, your-skin-but-better finish. And a little goes a long way; it takes just two pumps to fully protect my face and neck. With this product, I actually look forward to putting on my sunscreen every morning!

Nancy’s Cultured Soy Yogurt

For me, the only non-dairy yogurt worth buying is one that’s both high in protein and has no added sugar. With 6 grams of protein and 0 grams of sugar per serving, Nancy’s Cultured Soy is the only one that meets those criteria (plus it’s super-low in calories). Because it’s unsweetened, it’s really nice with savory foods (try a spoonful on top of chili) and is a good substitute for regular yogurt in recipes. Best of all, I can let my kid finish off a bowlful knowing that it’s actually good for her. So happy we carry this product! East only.

Grown locally, these tomatoes bring the taste of August to us early! Their flavor is superb, and it is so nice to have a fresh, rich tasting, local tomato to pair with some fresh local lettuce in May and June, especially on a BLT.

Is there any bigger signal of Spring than local asparagus? When I buy it I feel like I’m celebrating the changing of the seasons. Like most spectacular local veggies, I like Asparagus simply prepared over the grill or pan cooked on the stovetop over med/high heat (to get the delicious blistering) with some oil or butter, salt, and pepper. I’ll also try to toss in some slivered almonds, lemon, or a quick aioli.

Wildcrafted Ramps

Oh, the wild leek, transitory gem of the soggy spring. I’ll eat these garlicky-oniony beauties with just about anything, though I can’t think of a better meal than eggs, morels, asparagus, ramps and a little diced bacon. Ramps are high in vitamins A and C, as well as in selenium and chromium. To stretch out their season, I like to lacto-ferment them, dry some leaves, or mix them into butter and freeze it–but their short-term availability remains one of the great joys of eating in season.

Peppery watercress thrives almost year-round in Wisconsin, but spring’s the high time for these spring-fed greens. One of the first crisp, refreshing plant foods of the season, watercress cleanses and rebuilds our bodies. It’s a nutritional powerhouse on all fronts! I especially like it on sandwiches, or in a salad with the first local spinach and feta (and ideally with other wild greens). One of my favorite foods of the season.

This is my go-to for the best fish fish tacos in the world. I can fry in olive oil with a dash of Cajun seasoning. The flesh is firm enough to stand up to the fillings, and don’t forget the Willy Street Guacamole.

The Juice Bar’s Mango Lassi is wonderful, but just ask for a substitution pineapple for the mango, and you will get a whole new experience. The natural tartness of the pineapple, lemon juice, and yogurt are balanced with luscious honey. Sunshine in a glass.
