BBulk buying bins at the Co-opulk

Looking to save some money and do good by the environment? Look no further than our bulk aisle!

Bulk Cooking Guide  |  Buying in Bulk Guide | Comparing Packaged vs. Bulk Costs for a Recipe

With hundreds of items to choose from, it’s easy to understand why our bulk aisle is the reason that many people shop at Willy Street Co-op. From basic staples like rice, beans, pastas, flours, and nuts; to decadent snacks like chocolate-covered almonds, candied ginger, and chocolate clusters; to an array of herbs and spices, we’ve got your bulk needs covered. We also offer a selection of bulk liquids, like olive oil and honey. Many of our bulk items are certified organic, and we source locally whenever possible.

Price
Buying in bulk is often cheaper! Packaging costs money, and when you buy in bulk that savings is passed on to you.
Sustainablilty
According to the EPA, 40% of America’s landfills are comprised of wasted food and food packaging. By shopping in bulk and purchasing only what you need, you can reduce both your food budget and your waste. Do you only need ½ lb of that obscure grain for the recipe you want to make? Instead of buying a 2lb package and wasting most of it, you can purchase exactly ½ lb in the bulk aisle. If you choose to put it in a reusable container, you’re eliminating the packaging waste as well. It’s a win win!
Fresh
If you’ve been in our bulk aisle recently, you know that it’s a busy place! Food moves through the bins quickly, meaning a fresher, higher quality product than you may find in a package. This is especially true at the Co-op, where we specialize in selling organic foods in bulk. Larger grocery stores may carry comparable organic options, but chances are they don’t move through them quite as quickly as we do.
Allergens in the bulk aisle
Willy Street Co-op staff takes pride in using high quality products and safe food-handling procedures. However, only packaged products with allergen-free claims should be considered safe for those who have extreme food-related allergies. Our re-packaged bulk items (“Willy-Packed” dried fruits, snacks, and other foods) are packed in our Kitchen, where common allergens (nuts, soy, wheat, dairy, eggs) are used daily. Our Bulk aisle also features some products that contain allergens, and airborne transfer of allergens could occur. For more information please ask our staff or see our allergen statement.

Produce

Setting the bar for fresh, organic, local, and fairly trade fruits and vegetables.

We receive produce deliveries seven days per week and work diligently with our distributors and local farmers to ensure that you’ll find only the freshest, highest quality (and tastiest!) produce on our shelves.

Plastic-Free Produce Storage Guide

Organic
We believe that organic agriculture is the best solution for ourselves, our families, our environment, and the hard working people who grow and harvest our food. For this reason, on average, about 97% of the fresh produce we carry in our produce departments at Willy East and Willy West is USDA certified organic. At Willy North, we carry a small line of conventional produce staples, our percentage of certified organic produce is closer to 80%.
Local

For us, local is not just a marketing scheme, it’s a way of life. Our produce buyers work with over 30 local farmers to bring the best selection of local produce you’ll find anywhere. We’ve been sourcing local produce for almost 50 years and we continue to develop relationships with new farmers as well as maintain and sustain our relationships with more established growers.

Fairly Traded
In an increasingly globalized food system, we believe it’s important to think beyond organic and local as we help build a truly sustainable food system. By purchasing certified Fair Trade products, you are ensuring that the farmers, farm workers, and laborers who grow our food get justly compensated for their work. At Willy Street Co-op, we’re proud to offer organic Fair Trade bananas and avocados on a daily basis. We also give buying preference to other fairly traded fruits and vegetables as they are available. In season, you’ll find many crops on our shelves with Fair Trade designation: bell peppers, mangos, tomatoes, strawberries, and more!

Willy Street Co-op has a proud tradition of supporting our local food community, and that tradition continues in our grocery department. Many types of packaged cheeses in a deli case

Cheese

Local, imported; we have it.

Cheese is kind of a big deal here. Whether you’re looking for a weekly staple or a special something to impress your guests, our cheese selection can meet your needs. Over 80% of our cheese sales are of local cheeses, so Wisconsin cheese lovers will find themselves awash in local choices from familiar producers like Carr Valley and Hook’s to lesser known folks like Little Brown Cow, Cesar’s Cheese, and Dreamfarm. Those looking for classics from across the pond will find those too—we maintain an extensive selection of imported cheeses from Spain, France, Italy, and others.

We know good cheese

We put a lot of work into knowing the cheese we sell. Are you looking for cheese made seasonally from pasture-based animals? Does your family love cheeses made from goat’s or sheep’s milk? Are you excited to try your first cheeses made from raw milk? Maybe you’re trying to avoid cheeses that use animal-based rennet? Our cheese staff can help you with all of these considerations as well as recipe and pairing ideas!
