Know Your Farmer: Ruesch Century Farm Organic Cranberries 👩🌾👨🌾
Supplying Willy Street Co-op since 1998
Ruesch Century Farm is the world's smallest organic cranberry bog, located about 120 miles north of Madison in Vesper, WI. Their farm is now in its fourth generation, and was purchased in 1879 by Leo and Kathrina Ruesch, which means the farm has been in their family for over 140 years. In the 1990s, they planted their first cranberry bog. They dry harvest, or "dry rake," their cranberries to help them stay fresh longer.
Cranberries are native to Wisconsin, and the Northeastern area of the U.S. They were used by Indigenous Peoples as food, medicine, dyes, and as a symbol of peace. Commercial production of cranberries began in the 1860s, and today, Wisconsin is the largest producer of cranberries in the U.S. and on track to be the largest cranberry producer in the world.
Ruesch Century Farm has kindly shared the Ruesch Family Cookbook on their website. I started making their citrus cranberry sauce (AKA "Mary's Cranberry Sauce") a few years ago, and I now can't go without it on Thanksgiving.
