We are excited to announce that for our 50th anniversary, which is coming up this October, we will be creating a new mural for Willy East. “Utopia,” the mural by Brazillian artist Panmela Castro that faces the fire station, was painted in 2012. Since then, the bright colors have faded and paint has flaked, and we determined that the 50th was a good occasion for a new mural. We are grateful to Panmela for her stunning artwork and expression of self all these years at our store! For more information about Panmela and her artwork, please visit panmelacastro.com/about. To give honor to this mural before it takes on another iteration, we want to provide a “Time of Remembrance,” where you can take final photos of yourself with this mural if you so desire. We wanted to utilize our 50th anniversary to celebrate a Dane County artist with their interpretation of our Vision Statement: Willy Street Co-op is a local community partner that nourishes a sustainable, accessible, and equitable food system where everyone can participate. We are conducting a call for artist proposals, facilitated through Developing Arts, Murals & Alliances (DAMA), with the sketches narrowed down by a Mural Co-op Staff Committee, and finally voted on by Owners.
